The Center for Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Policy (3CSEP) at Central
European University (CEU), Budapest, is inviting Masters degree holders with
an interest in the research areas of the Center to apply for the PhD program
of CEU’s Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy. Successful
candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at the Department while taking part
in research activities of 3CSEP and working on a related dissertation topic
under the supervision of Prof. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, Director of 3CSEP.

The research agenda will be developed to closely match the candidate’s
interests and capacities. Core areas of research currently undertaken at 3CSEP
include the contribution of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources to
climate change mitigation, with a particular focus on energy used in
buildings, as well as co-benefits of sustainable energy solutions (economic
impacts, alleviation of fuel poverty, etc.). Much of the research is
policy-related and contributes to the governance of international and national
decision-making processes related to climate change and sustainable energy.
For more details please consult the Center’s website at http://3csep.ceu.hu/,
especially the section on current and former research projects.

Candidates for this position must hold a Masters degree in an area relevant
for the interdisciplinary research conducted at 3CSEP, such as economics,
engineering, environmental studies or related subjects. Candidates should have
demonstrated academic excellence as well as a passion for research and
commitment to academic success. Strong quantitative analytical skills as well
as good writing abilities in English are a distinct advantage.

The Environmental Sciences and Policy PhD Program provides a unique
opportunity to pursue fundamental and applied research to address some of the
most urgent challenges in the world. The program is designed to specifically
develop and target students’ interests towards achieving the experience,
knowledge, and skills warranting their status as a PhD within three years. Our
graduates emerge from the program with a broad understanding of diverse
approaches to environmental and climate problems, extensive practical research
experience, professional networks and analytical and practical thinking
skills.

Central European University is a fully English-speaking international
university accredited in both the United States and Hungary. The doctoral
program is registered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State
of New York (USA). CEU provides a full tuition waiver as well as a living
stipend for 3 years for all full-time PhD students. Furthermore, PhD students
taking part in 3CSEP research are likely to get opportunities for additional
paid work on research projects of the Center.

Applications for the PhD course starting in September 2011 can be submitted
online through http://www.ceu.hu/admissions until January 24 for non-native
English speakers and March 14 for native speakers of English. Please note
that, in addition to standard CEU admissions requirements, the Department of
